Queenstown & surroundings

Queenstown & Lake Wakatipu

New Zealand costum world-map:
New Zealand is no longer "down under" - it`s on top!

On the way from Queenstown to Mt. Cook we stopped because there was some smoke ... and nobody knew if there are some more gas-bottles which probably would explode.
As far as I was told nobody was injured.

As some source told me this "insider information" this spot is a site where
the biggest battle in "Lord of the Rings" was filmed.

on the way to TWIZEL....
where we planned to take a plain for a scenic flight to Mt. Cook on the next day....
Eventually we made the flight from north of Twizel with "Air Safaris".

Mt. Cook (3754 m) - the tallest Mountain in New Zealand in the background.

Lake Tekapo / 58,5km north of Twizel were we camped for the night....

Lake Wanaka & Lake Hawea

Lake Wanaka is a very nice spot - that`s maybe one reason why many rich people from Christchurch have a holiday letting here... Lake Wanaka - click here to see a satellite-pic!

In Lake Wanaka & the surroundings are many spots which were used in the Trilogy "Lord of the Rings" as well ... what might make it easier for you to imagine, what the area looks like.

For me it was an vantage point to participate in an sportive fun-adventure activity:
White water sledging!

See this link for details about white water sledging and click here for pictures.

The reason why I booked my tour with "frogz" was the board-design which is in use @frogz only.
There are two more companies which do sledging in Queenstown/Wanaka but they use different boards which seemed to be not as good for this special purpose in my point of view.

The sledging trip itself then took place in the gorge of the Kawarau River where a scene in "Lord of the Rings" was filmed, which made it even more exciting for me.

The female guide and two more girls and I took the challange and really enjoyed it!
We took the 5km-ride twice - where the second run was starting more far upstream and made the trip longer - and we loved it in the end!!

Click here for the satellite-pic for having a look to the spot we first started to get a picture from what the gagobert experienced.... (click here for the official www.frogz.co.nz locator)

NZ - Northland & Cape Reinga

The 1st real destination the motorhome took us was

"'Tane Mahuta' (God of the Forest)"
and afterwards to

CAPE REINGA.

We were breezing the delicious air in the rainforest and
the feeling can be compared with being in a botanical garden
- with the only difference - this here is
pristine and 100% real.

There`s no spot more far north on the main islands of New Zealand to go.... and there`s a beautiful lighthouse.

After my sis & dad arrived in New Zealand we took a motorhome rental for a 4 weeks roundtrip.
Because I respect the wish of my sis there will be no pics showing her.... but one or two showing my dad of course.

The arrival-zone on the Auckland International Airport.

somewhere in Auckland....

Skyline Auckland, photo taken from Davenport

Probably the most beautiful city-district of Auckland
but definitively my favorite one!

groovy!

Ivory and the special offer so bring your song wishes on....

live of course!

on the way....

to the famous big tree.....

on the tree itself there are 30 other plants growing.... WOW!
It is 51,5 tall and between 1250 and 2500 years old.

Big sanddunes in the background .... on the way....

Mit dem "Moppped" durch NZ

My selfguided NZ motorbike ride on 13.02.2008 took me from Auckland to Piha Beach - West Coast (Tasman Sea) -and then to Mt. Maunganui (Tauranga) pacific east coast of New Zealand (maps.google-link).

After a stopover for the night in Tairua (many thanks to my host)
I eventually made it back to AKL at 10:00am.

Sky Tower impressions

Hey ...

been on the platforms of the Sky Tower -the tallest building of the Southern Hemisphere.

Klick 4 a bigger image!

ciao, gagobert
